VPN & travel access guides

VPN marketing is notorious for exaggerated "military-grade" claims. In practice, whether a VPN works depends on protocol design, server obfuscation, and active resistance to Deep Packet Inspection (DPI).

We do not promote generic top-10 lists. Instead, our research focuses on practical network constraints, particularly for users traveling through or living in strictly filtered environments:

  • Protocol mechanics: Why standard WireGuard and OpenVPN handshakes are instantly identified and throttled by modern firewalls, and why stealth/obfuscated protocols are essential.
  • Reliability realities: Censorship resistance is an active cat-and-mouse game. No provider guarantees 100% uninterrupted uptime during major political events or firewall upgrades.
  • Travel preparation: Why setting up your VPN apps, configuration keys, and backup accounts before entering a restricted region is the single most important step you can take.

Our testing boundary: We explain protocol mechanics and network architecture. We do not provide circumvention tutorials, server files, or fabricated connection benchmarks. See our evaluation standards on How We Pick.
